Infantino Sling Rider Recall

// March 24th, 2010 // No Comments » // Children and Babies

I bought this Infantino Sling Rider for the Bear when he was a tiny little new Bear, thinking it was safer than other slings because of the little harness inside.  Recently, however, I heard that 3 babies suffocated in it in 2009.  I was shocked that it hadn’t been recalled yet after 3 infant deaths.

Today, I got my recall notice.  If you have an Infantino Sling Rider or a Wendy Bellissimo sling, read about the recall here.  To find out if you have a recalled sling and to return the item, click here.

At-Home Scoring

// March 23rd, 2010 // No Comments » // Opportunities, Work at Home

Earlier, I wrote that I had to turn down a couple of temporary online scoring opportunities from Pearson because I didn’t think I’d be able to work 20-30 hours per week on top of working full-time outside the home.  However, I received notice of another Pearson opportunity.  Although it’s still 20-30 hours per week, it will only last 1-1/2 to 2 weeks.  I can suck it up and work that much for such a short time, and I’ve accepted that assignment.  I’m pretty excited for the chance to make a little extra money and to see how the at-home scoring works for me.  The assignment is during the first couple of weeks of May, so after I see how it goes, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Be a Trophy Wife, courtesy of Groupon.

// March 23rd, 2010 // No Comments » // Couponing, Money Matters

I think that my new job should be Trophy Wife.  I think being tan and pretty would just be the perfect occupation for me.  Then, WAHM could stand for Wonderful and Hot Mom (thanks to Hot Husband for that acronym) instead of Work at Home Mom.

Today’s Groupon offer will really help me fulfill my dream of becoming a smokin’ hot trophy wife:  A 24-day pass for tanning AND toning at Tan & Tone America.  That’s up to 94% off the regular price ($384 for $24–wow!).   You’ll be tanned, toned, and have an extra $360 in your pocket.   You’ll be not just a Trophy Wife, but a Rich Trophy Wife.  Suh-weet!  Click here to get in on this deal.

Just for added motivation, here is a picture of me with Hot Husband, pre-Bear days, when I had time to be tan and pretty–and could afford a beach vacation:

*sigh*

Random Act of Cuteness

// March 23rd, 2010 // No Comments » // Children and Babies, Life in General

I posted about Bear getting his first haircut, but I never followed up.  He did such a great job–he didn’t fuss and didn’t even wiggle too much (bribing with Gerber’s Puffs helped).  I, however, cried before, during, and after the whole ordeal.  Now that I finally love his big boy hair (while still missing his baby hair), I thought I’d post some pictures:

And Bear’s Big Boy After Hair:

Look at those big blue eyes.  Wouldn’t YOU want to stay home with him all day, too?

Today’s Bargains

// March 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Couponing, Money Matters

After picking up the Bear after school, we ran some errands to pick up some freebies and some good deals.  I got everything in the picture below for $4.57:

5 boxes of cereal, 2 Yakisoba noodle dinners, Olay Quench lotion, Crystal Light, Lunchables Sub, Tuna, Buitoni Fettuccini, 2 coupons for FREE milk, 1 raincheck for a FREE Olay In-Shower Lotion, and a coupon for .50/2 Bumblebee Tuna pouches.

The only things I paid for in that picture are the cereals.  So, $4.57 for 5 boxes of cereal, and the rest free?  Awesome.

Not included in the picture are the diapers from my CVS run:  2 jumbo packages (31 diapers each) Pampers Cruisers for $11 out of pocket (I had $4 Extra Care Bucks) and $6 in Extra Care Bucks . . . that’s like $2.50 each!!

I just realized I didn’t check to see if the stove was clean before taking that picture.  Oh, dear.  Well, maybe you’ll be so blinded by my fantastic deals that you won’t notice whether or not the stovetop is clean.

Remember:  If you are in the OKC area, swing by the Clip SmART seminar on Monday, March 29, and find out how to get savings even better than these!

Mommysavers

// March 21st, 2010 // No Comments » // Life in General, Money Matters, Work at Home

I found another site that I really like, and I want to share it with you.  Mommysavers has all kinds of information for moms trying to save money, pinch pennies, and make ends meet.  From articles to forums to blog posts, Mommysavers has a wealth of information for anyone trying to be more frugal.

One thing I really like about Mommysavers is their Random Acts of Kindness forum.  On this forum, people post things that they are willing to give away.  Actually, it doesn’t have to just be “things”–it can be time or even a nontangible, like a shoulder to cry on as well.  In this forum, a lot of people give away coupons for things they don’t need, and all they ask is that you do the same.  For example, I’m getting some Pampers coupons for posting a $10 off Bahama Breeze coupon (since our Bahama Breeze closed . . . *sniffle*).

Another thing that I like about the Mommysavers forums is that there is a WAHM forum.  I’ve found a lot of frugal living/couponing sites, and a few WAHM sites, but rarely have I found both in one place.  I like Mommysavers because it gives me both things on one site.

If you aren’t familiar with Mommysavers, head on over and check it out.

Quicktate

// March 21st, 2010 // 7 Comments » // Opportunities, Work at Home

When I first started browsing WAHM job listings, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do–besides work from home.  I didn’t know what most of the jobs would entail, or what kind of training they would require.  I started to see listings for transcription jobs, and since I am a fairly quick (though untrained) typist, I thought one of those might work for me.

What I discovered was that many of the jobs required some type of transcription training or education.  I don’t have the time or the money to go back to school (again) to learn a new trade.  Other jobs required the purchase of specific equipment to work with the company’s software or transcription methods.*  I didn’t really want to spend money on equipment for a job I didn’t know I’d like.

Then I found Quicktate.  Quicktate is a service that transcribes voicemail to text.  Subscribers can read their voicemail via email, text messaging, or iPhone widget.  Quicktate doesn’t require certification–just that you be a fast and accurate typist with a good grasp of English language, spelling, and grammar.

In the Quicktate application, you must include how many words per minute you type.  Since I had not taken a typing test since tenth grade, I had no idea what my typing skills were.  Not to worry–Quicktate even provides a link to a typing test which provides your WPM for the application.

On Quicktate’s application information, they state their requirements:

What we require

1. Accurate spelling and punctuation.
2. Typists that know how to follow instructions.
3. Typists that can listen to voice files and accurately type what they hear.
4. Speed. You don’t have to be the fastest typist, but you can’t be too slow either.
5. Honesty, integrity and reliability.

That looked like something I could handle, so I applied, and was accepted.

Pay for Quicktate is nothing that will replace a teacher’s salary, but if you are just looking to bring in a little extra money, it might do the trick.  Quicktate pays 1/4th cent per word . . . so a penny every four words.  That sounds ridiculous, but the average typist would make $5-7/hour, according to Quicktate.

It is kind of interesting typing people’s voicemails.  People will say just about anything on a voicemail (Caution:  If you have “delicate ears,” you may hear some things you don’t want to.  You don’t have to type expletives, though.  You can just type **** in place of the dirty word).

The biggest problem I had with Quicktate was that they are busiest during the day, and I could only work at night.  This meant that some evenings, I didn’t get enough messages to type.  However, I have recently begun receiving daily emails from Quicktate about how busy they are, and that they need as many typists to log in as possible.

The best thing about Quicktate is that it can be done any time.  They are open 24/7, and you do not have to schedule shifts.  You can type a voicemail or two, go answer a phone call, type a couple more, change a diaper.  Really, you can type any time you happen to have free.  Also, Quicktate prefers you are logged in anytime you are at your computer.  You could be surfing the web, reading your favorite blog (like Nix9to5), browsing Facebook (like the Nix9to5 Fan Page), or catching up with tweets (like Nix9to5 on Twitter).  When a voicemail message comes through for you to type, you hear it begin playing, and you just switch screens and type away.  The average voicemail file is only a minute or two long, so it’s easy to work in the time you have.

If transcribing for Quicktate sounds like something you’d like to do, you can find out more information and apply here.

Ah, Spring.

// March 20th, 2010 // No Comments » // Life in General

Spring is finally here:  flowers blooming, birds chirping, bright sun, and warm breezes.  To celebrate, I took a shower today and shaved my legs (I’m not even going to tell you how long it has been since I last did that), slathered myself in self-tanning moisturizer, and painted my toenails bright pink, all in preparation for breezy sundresses and strappy sandals.  Once I had properly prepared myself for the glorious weather ahead, I gazed out the window to this magnificent spectacle of rebirth and renewal:

Stupid groundhog.
